How to Observe Cosmic Rays with the App

Installation

First, install the Soramame app. It is compatible with iOS 11 or later for iPhone, iPad, and Android 4.4 or later.

Android

iOS

Simply install and launch the app to start measuring cosmic rays. Initially, it adjusts the noise level, and once the adjustment is complete, it switches to actual measurement. Depending on the device, noise adjustment may take a long time (several hours). Please leave it connected to the power adapter.

Light Shielding

Shield the rear camera from light. If light enters, it will cause an error and stop the measurement. If placing the rear camera downwards still results in an error, place it in a dark area or use black tape to block the light.

Power Adapter

It is recommended to keep the power adapter connected. By observing for long periods, you can measure cosmic rays.

Frequency of Cosmic Ray Arrival

Cosmic ray particle arrival frequency is typically once every few minutes, at most. Environmental radiation is also included, slightly more frequently than cosmic rays. Depending on the sensitivity of the device, it may be as infrequent as once every few hours. Connect to power and leave it for long-term observation.

Cosmic Ray Results

Observation results are published in real-time on the Cosmic Ray Candidate Data page. Although it is still under development, future plans include device-specific search and graph display functions.

About Threshold Setting

When the app is launched for the first time, it enters a learning phase to determine the noise level and automatically sets the detection threshold. During this phase, the detection rate may temporarily appear very high.
To ensure accurate calibration, please keep the app running for at least 3 hours after the initial launch.
Once the threshold is established, the ,“Keep the current threshold value”, option will be checked.
After that, you can begin observations in different environments, such as on airplanes or in high-latitude regions.
